The 16 Cowrie Shells-Ẹ́rindínlógún and the 16 Elders;

A single Sea Shell is called AYÉ, it is also the word for world.

The story of Obàtálá and the Yoruba Genesis: The Story of Obàtálá is that he is sent to Earth to create Life: Obàtálá is sent to the Earth, and it was said to him that he had to go to the Earth with a gold chain, with an Ayé (Sea shell), a handful of earth/dirt, and a black Cat (Ologbo dundun). There are 16 Cowrie Shells as they are 16 Wise kings and each one of these kings has one of the 16 kingdoms. The Sea shell is called AYÉ, because it is its world, there were 16 Realms or Worlds (this also in correspondence with the 16 ÓDÙN (ODÙ) or 16 UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLES). When you are traditionally consulted with the ÒÒŞÀ Cowrie Shell, in an example of a Cowrie shell (Ẹ́rindínlógún) throw you are told;

If there are (9 Cowrie Shells mouth up): "9 Elders will speak, and 7 Elders will not pronounce a Word"

If it comes ÒŞÉ (5 Cowrie Shells mouth up): "5 Elders go to Speak, and 11 Elders Will not pronounce a Word"

That's because each Cowrie Shells represents one of the 16 Elders, one of the 16 Kings of the 16 kingdoms. From here come the 16 Cowrie Shells.
