Bàbá ÉJÌ OGBÈ

It represents the 8 “Switches” that represent the 8 Sacred Fires. These 8 lit switches represent the LIGHT in the manifestation of the Universe, The Creation.

Odùdúwà: In Bàbá ÉJÌ OGBÈ are all 8 switches are on. In Ọ̀yẹ̀kú Méjì all 8 switches are off. The four on the right or the four on the left. That is why Bàbá Éjì Ogbè is the first one, because it is the one that turns on all 8, the four on the right and the four on the left. A vision of programming. Éjì Ogbè turned on the eight switches of life and existence. This was the beginning practically. Because he turned on the eight switches. The eight switches of existence. In Ọ̀yẹ̀kú Méjì are all eight turned off. He who was one to become two. Ifalenu: The yin and the yang. Yang to yin, the active to the passive. The one who was one to become two. Yang line, yin line. As yin is a full yang line and a split yin line. Here in the case it is one vertical male line and two vertical lines representing the female. The one that was one to become two. It is either on or off. Odùdúwà: Which is the oldest Odù sign?

Ifalenu: Well, there are two versions that I have seen. There is the one of Òfún and Éjì Ogbè and there is the one of Ọ̀yẹ̀kú and Éjì Ogbè. It is said that Ọ̀yẹ̀kú was going to be the first, but he fell asleep, drank a lot, got drunk, and Éjì Ogbè took over and was given the power. Òfún is the oldest. I was just going to ask about those two stories of Òfún and Éjì Ogbè and Ọ̀yẹ̀kú and Éjì Ogbè.

Odùdúwà: It is Ọ̀yẹ̀kú, because it is the oldest. Ọ̀yẹ̀kú can be like total darkness, because everything is turned off. It's like what they call Dudu Nlá - the Great Darkness.

At the beginning of everything, when there was nothing, everything was dark, that is Dudu Nlá, the great darkness.

The eight fires were lit, the four on the right representing Ifá, the four on the left representing Èşù. Then, it is the oldest, which was Ọ̀yẹ̀kú Méjì, representing the Dudu Nlá, the great extinguished, or the great darkness. Bàbá Éjì Ogbè has his dwelling in the void.

What is the greatest force that exists in the universe?

Ifalenu: The black darkness, the dark matter. The depth.

Odùdúwà: NO. What is the most powerful force?

Ifalenu: The gravity.

Odùdúwà: No, it has to do with Ọ̀yẹ̀kú = The void. The void is the most powerful force in the universe. Dudu Nlá = The void, yes. So much so that a theory is proposed, or a hypothesis is created regarding it, where it is considered that a civilization, if it is capable of expanding and utilizing the force of the Void, could conquer galaxies and the entire universe. The dilemma that arises from this is that whoever improperly manipulates the void could cause the entire reality to collapse.

Ifalenu: Yes, like entropy. An implosion. And that which implodes, where does it go?

Odùdúwà: The material that implodes goes to the spiritual realm. To the other plane. The material that implodes goes to the spiritual plane. If it is manipulated improperly, it can cause the entire reality to be destroyed. Reality is destroyed. They wouldn't even feel what happened after that. That is the most appropriate analogy. They wouldn't even feel that. That's why their dwelling resides there. Why? His dwelling is in the void.

Danny: Ah, of course, because it is the force that keeps everything there.

Odùdúwà: If the void were to become even slightly unbalanced, everything would collapse. All the particles, everything is there. As I was saying, it is the most potent or the most powerful force in the universe. If something in that force failed, everything else would collapse. Because that keeps everything in its place far away. Ah, it's true that it's as if all of that were suspended by threads, and the threads or the tension of the threads were Bàbá Éjì Ogbè, then, if the tension were to be soldered or become unbalanced, everything would collapse.

Odùdúwà: Yes, excellent analogy.

Ifalenu: So, between Bàbá Éjì Ogbè and Bàbá Òfún, Bàbá Òfún would be the Elder Odú. And between Bàbá Éjì Ogbè and Bàbá Ọ̀yẹ̀kú, the Elder would be Bàbá Ọ̀yẹ̀kú. Between Bàbá Éjì Ogbè and Bàbá Òfún, Òfún is the elder. And between Bàbá Éjì Ogbè and Bàbá Ọ̀yẹ̀kú, he is the oldest.

Odùdúwà: Òfún is considered the eldest, due to all the wisdom he possesses. For being the eldest. At the moment when Òfún becomes the last of the Méjì (Double Signs), the accumulation of experience between Bàbá Éjì Ogbè and Bàbá Òfún makes him the eldest. This is a metaphor regarding the wisdom that Òfún acquires by being the last.

Ifalenu: Of course, and the Power, because if one looks at the sequence of Bàbá Éjì Ogbè, which opens the paths, to Bàbá Òfún, who says that through his prayer/oriki, his invocation, he creates Miracles.

Jaime: This is the experience that begins to go through each of the signs. In the end, he is the one who gathered all the Knowledge of all of them.

And the other, the one of Bàbá Éjì Ogbè and Bàbá Ọ̀yẹ̀kú, darkness is older than light.

He is the one who makes it activate.

ÈŞÙ was the one who awakened Olòdúmarè, and after Olòdúmarè awakened, the first to cry was Bàbá Éjì Ogbè. The 16 ODÙ MÉJÌ were born at the Same Instant, at the Same Moment, meaning they were all born at once. If any of them were not, Reality could not have been Created. They were all born instantaneously and at the same moment. However, by representing Bàbá Ọ̀yẹ̀kú as the darkness, which was the oldest thing that could have existed within existence itself, it is understood why Bàbá Éjì Ogbè becomes the first. And it is understood why Bàbá Ọ̀yẹ̀kú Méjì is considered the oldest. Bàbá Éjì Ogbè is the Light, Bàbá Ọ̀yẹ̀kú is the absence of Light.

In an existence, what came first? The Darkness in emptiness. Ọ̀yẹ̀kú Méjì, representing darkness, is considered the oldest. Because it existed even before the Olódùmarès awakened.

Danny: Can Ọ̀yẹ̀kú Méjì be considered the sign of Eshu?

Odùdúwà: No. One thing are the deities and another thing are the 16 Elders (represented by the 16 Odù Méjì).

Odùdúwà: No. One thing are the deities and another thing are the 16 Elders. The Elders are the ones who created a Reality where all the Powers of that universe could coexist and converge. In this case, the powers of that universe would be the Irúnmọ̀les. However, both are tied to existence. The sixteen Principles and the 401 Irúnmọ̀les. Ọ̀yẹ̀kú Méjì is the oldest, representing darkness. In the beginning, everything is dark. The great darkness.

To understand the elders, one must realize that the elders did not emerge with the stories or the poems. The poems and stories emerged from the 16 Elders. Relatively few texts discuss the primordial essence of the elders. In most texts, the 16 Elders are discussed based on the stories that come from them, but not on what they are.
